Wash and use an electric blanket by its exact instructions
Heated mattress pads, bed blankets and throws must be set up, washed and stored according to the instructions for the exact model. A generic “machine washable” label does not replace the permitted cycle, drying sequence, controller removal and full-dry-before-reconnecting steps.
Assemble before connecting power
For the reviewed Sunbeam bedding, the manual directs you to place the label at the foot of the bed facing upward, fit the controller connector fully into its module until the latches secure, route the control cord under the bed, and only then plug the power cord into a 110–120-volt wall outlet. The connector must be fully seated. A loose connection is explicitly identified as a fire risk.
Check the whole cable route. Keep it away from mattress pinch points, slats, moving bed mechanisms, furniture edges and places where someone can snag it. The product page lists a 19-foot cord, but do not add an extension or plug adapter to make an unsafe route work. The manual also prohibits generator and inverter use. Keep the controller where it will stay dry, visible and accessible.
Inspect before using
Look over the blanket, controller and cord for wear or damage each time before use. Stop and unplug if the blanket behaves unusually or damage appears. The manual says not to use the product wet, folded or bunched; excess heating can result if it is folded or gathered during operation. Keep every part visible rather than covering a control inside a sofa or other furniture. Use the item only for its intended household purpose and follow the warning label for the exact model.
Sunbeam's warning sheet lists people who should not use this heated product, including infants and anyone unable to understand or operate the control or reliably sense heat. It also advises keeping pets away from the electrical bedding and says to ask a healthcare provider about use with a pacemaker or other medical device. Those are product safety warnings, not a suggestion that a heated blanket treats any condition. If the warning does not fit the intended user, do not improvise around it.
Disconnect the control before washing
First unplug the power cord from the wall. Only then release the controller connector from the blanket, squeezing its latches as instructed. Keep the control and cord out of water. Inspect that no part is still attached and follow the care directions closely; the manual warns that improper laundering can damage heating wire and create a fire hazard. Do not reconnect while any part of the blanket is damp.
Use the specific wash and dry sequence
Sunbeam's current leaflet permits cold water on a gentle machine cycle or hand washing. It says to use a low, delicate tumble-dry setting, remove the blanket while still damp, gently stretch it back toward its original size, and then hang it over a clothesline or rack until completely dry. Do not use clothespins. The manual also rules out commercial dryers, bleach, fabric softeners, ironing, dry cleaning, mothballs and sprays. Store the cooled blanket loosely rather than winding its cord around the controller, and avoid creasing it under items placed on top.
The marketing description “dryer safe” does not mean hot or commercial drying. The current page-linked 32810140 manual has the same low-heat/damp-removal sequence and requires the pad to be completely dry before reconnecting. If your only dryer is a commercial laundromat dryer or you cannot finish air-drying before reassembly, consider whether this care cycle suits your household.
Use the timer as a control, not a safety guarantee
The current product pages list a 12-hour auto shutoff, while the manual describes selectable shutoff from one through 12 hours and says the last timer and heat settings are remembered. That feature does not replace turning the blanket off when it is not in use, inspecting it or following the manual's other restrictions. A heating level number is not an actual temperature reading, and the maker does not publish a measured heat-up time for this family.
Recheck the item you actually receive
Sunbeam's recalled 2023 Queen blanket was model 32810027; that is a different identifier from the reviewed 32810144 and 32810136 products. Always check the sewn-in label and consult the manufacturer's recall information if a model number differs or you are identifying an older item. A page for a current product is not a safety clearance for every Sunbeam blanket, every variant or every used item.
Keep the 32810140 pad review, microplush review or brushed-fleece review open for the exact SKU and the manufacturer’s linked 2026 instruction leaflets. The pad and gray fleece page link the IMBCCY24ES-A manual; model 32810144 links a separate controller manual.
A throw has its own controller and furniture warnings
The confirmed foot-pocket throw is linked to a separate 2025 heated-throw manual. Its four-level single button turns the product off after four continuous hours; it does not have the adjustable one-to-12-hour timer described for the bed blankets. The throw manual also warns against use on rocking chairs, chairs with casters or other moving furniture, and says not to tuck the cord or controller into a sofa. Keep all areas visible and use the exact model review for variant and cord details. Do not assume that instructions for a bed blanket fully cover a throw.
A cordless throw still needs battery and charging care
Model 32810128 has a separate 2026 On-the-Go manual. Charge only the supplied battery pack with its supplied charger, using the USB-C connection described in that manual. For heating, connect the pack fully to the throw's stored USB lead, activate the pack and use the embedded control. Battery estimates depend on the heat level and environment; the model has no documented auto-off interval. If turned off while the pack remains connected for over two hours, the battery may need to be woken before the throw is used again.
For laundering, disconnect the battery before washing and do not remove the throw's USB cord. Use cold gentle-cycle or hand wash, tumble low/delicate, remove while damp, stretch back toward size and air-dry completely before reconnecting. The manual says not to immerse or alter the battery, to avoid water and extreme temperatures, and to stop using a damaged or swollen pack. Store it cool and dry away from flammable materials. The product page's water- and wind-resistant wording does not supersede the manual's household-use and no-wet-use instructions. Read the model 32810128 assessment and full instructions for details.
